When I was a kid there were a handful of movies my brother Mitch and I rented over and over again, and at the top of that list was RAD. It was one of our default picks if we couldn’t find anyting else to take home, and we still quote it to this day. If only I could hop in a Delorean and travel back in time to tell ten year-old me that I would be working on the ultimate home media release of the film in 2026. I am excited to announce Umbrella will be presenting the ultimate RAD experience on June 4th with a 4k set packed with new and historical special features, fresh essays in the accompanying booklet, the 2025 feature-length documentary A RAD MOVIE, posters, cards, and more. When I got the nod on this, I immediately reached out to superfans Jorma Taccone (SNL, HOT ROD, LONELY ISLAND BOYS) and Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, A MINECRAFT MOVIE) who were both thrilled to team up on a hilarious, nostalgic new audio commentary. I also reached out to Paul Scheer, co-host of the HOW DID THIS GET MADE? pocast, recalling the time I went to see HDTGM in Chicago for the live recording of their episode on RAD. Paul, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Rapheal were immeidately on board for our release, so you will get that episode of their show as an alternate audio track option with the film.
Because we are porting forward so many historical special features, I wanted to take a different approach to the new stuff, turning to the real world of BMX for some insightful interviews with track and freestyle legends Bob Morales (rider coordinator on the movie) and Rick Moliterno, who appears in the film. This marks the first time Rick has ever spoken on the record about RAD, and both he and Bob offer a fascinating look back to the mid-1980s when RAD was made, and when BMX riders were rock stars.
The booklet has new essays from David Michael Brown, Christian Bogh, and me, and I went with a fun layout echoing the BMX magazines my friends and I obsessed over when we were kids. There is just SO MUCH for you in this set! Truly the ultimate release of this treasured film.
