Scream Factory’s unthinkable FRIDAY THE 13TH boxed set, landing October 13th and now up for pre-order at ShoutFactory.com, is a fan’s dream. Sixteen Blu-ray discs packaged in a gorgeous display box sporting Devon Whitehead’s series-spanning art. Even if you didn’t get in early on the limited edition poster and lithograph (relegated to the first 1,313 orders), what you will be receiving is nothing short of a treasure chest of bloody goodness. Scream/Shout! Factory initially listed a handfull of extras, and now have unveiled the full line-up including the pieces from my Reverend Entertainment.
This set is a unique entity in that many producers pitched in on it, and I am so proud to be involved. The world of special features isn’t very big, yet it is rare that those of us working in this little corner of entertainment get to appear on the same title. So impressed and excited about what everyone pitched in. In addition there are cut scenes and so much more.
I contributed six pieces of the puzzle. Let’s take a look at each one…
Music Video: Alice Cooper The Man Behind the Mask
Alice Cooper’s music plays a crucial role in JASON LIVES, yet the great tie-in video for the song HE’S BACK has largely been lost to the sands of time. Never appearing on any video release of the film before and relegated to grimy YouTube VHS boots, I thought it was long overdue for fans, and Alice, to have this given its rightful place in FRIDAY history on the box. Video director Jeffrey Abelson went above and beyond, scouring his storage until he located the sole existing tape of the video which we remastered as best we could for inclusion here. So happy it is finally home where it belongs.
Alice Lives: Alice Cooper And Friday The 13th Part VI – A Look At The Music Video The Man Behind The Mask Featuring Interviews With Alice Cooper And Director Jeffrey Abelson
As a life-long fan of Alice Cooper and JASON LIVES, this was the first concept that I pitched when the boxed set came up in converastion with Shout!. One day I was talking with my friend Jake Manders, who cites JASON LIVES as his favorite film, about the importance of Alice’s music in the film and this feature came to life. Having a great long-standing relationship with Alice, I reached out and he was thrilled to come on board. Shortly thereafter I tracked down Jeffrey Abelson, director of the HE’S BACK music video that ties in with the film, who similarly dove in with excitement (and also got us access to his sole remaining vopy of the HE’S BACK music video that we scanned for inclusion). The result is a rich discussion with Alice on his love for the genre, the tracks for JASON LIVES, and what it all means to him now, with Abelson popping in a couple times to help lend perspective on the back-end of the production. The story behind Alice’s participation in the film has been one of the great lost stories in F13 lore, and I am honored to be presenting it here in full.
Life, Death And Jason Voorhees – An interview With Director Tom McLoughlin
Again back to JASON LIVES, I have long admired director Tom McLoughlin and this entry in the series. When I approached Tom about an interview, knowing he had thoroughly covered most of the territory around the film already in commentaries and othe features, we agreed on a very different kind of discussion. Tom asked to be shot in the mausoleum at Hollywood Forever Cemetery where he will eventually be interred, so the setting was already special. The talk that ensued is wide-ranging, from JASON LIVES, to mythology in horror, Alice Cooper and rock n’ roll, life and death, and a deep dive on his concept for a direct sequel titled JASON NEVER DIES, along with never-before-seen concept art. Tom was very hands on with this piece and came up with a nice, dramatic ending that sends him off in a special way. A great chat with one of the legends.
My Life With Ginny – A Conversation With Actress Amy Steel, Moderated By Justin Beahm
Amy Steel hs been a longtime ambassador of the genre and world of FRIDAY THE 13TH. When I launched my podast The Justin Beahm Radio Hour several years ago, my aim was to feature people I admired and cared about in the business, and Amy was one of the first guests I had on. This feature is that discussion, dusted off and cleaned up as best I could considering how primitive my recording techinique was at the time it was originally created. In addition to plety of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 talk, we cover Amy’s life and various side roads her career has led her down. It is a rare, relaxed chat that we both really enjoyed and that I hope you like, too. Includes podcast logo from Kevin Spencer and theme music from Finally Some Action.
Jason Was Here: Friday The 13th Part 3 – 6 Locations Then and Now
I am a junkie for location pieces and have teamed up with the great Robert Patterson and his Set-Jetter in the past, so in the 11th hour I reached out to him to see if we could gather materials for something to include with the box that focused on his historical exploration of locations from F13 3-6. The result was put together quickly and became something unlike most behind the scenes pieces of the kind. Robert made quick work of getting me his stills, my friend Kristian Day did the image blending, and I had the base. From there I reached out to my artist pal (and JBRH logo designer) Kevin Spencer to create art to introduce each film’s segment (all of which is outstanding), and had Finally Some Action create individual music tracks to run under each portion. The result is something of a musical and visual adventure, less formal in structure and more something nice to enjoy as a work of art. I am proud to have all these artists together here and think it is a really unusual way to revisit places we know so well from these films we have spent decades with. Oh, and as for why the mask on the title screen is from JASON TAKES MANHATTAN: I had Kevin come up with a piece on that one as well, as we originally were looking at including that film’s location, but in the end it didn’t make sense to jump from 6 to that one, and was too short to end with. That art, though, couldn’t be cast aside, so it is included with the titles.
Friday The 13thFangoria Article Archives
I was honored to be a feature writer for Fangoria magazine for a number of years, and have mourned the loss of the archives (there was a warehouse fire some time ago where most everything was lost). Similarly to the Alice Cooper elements, I immeidately thought about including articles from Fango that were so crucial to fan love over the years, and found enthusisastic agreement from everyone on the magazine end of things. Their staff combed through all the archives and sent us scans of every F13-related piece they could find, including posters and covers, so what you have sprinkled throughout this set is as complete a record as possible from the pages of horror’s most storied periodical. A way to give back to Fango, FRIDAY fans, and all the writers who have contributed so much over time as these movies transitioned from a blockbuster indie to one of the most important series in the genre.
